"SPIRIT OF SPORT" Six Living Sports Legends To commemorate the 15th Anniversary Year of the Special Olympics, six outstanding athletes were chosen by the Special Olympics to represent the "Spirit of Sport." Noted American artist, Robert Peak, asked these athletes to express their personal feelings on the true meaning of sport, and translated each athlete's words into art, creating six beautiful and meaningful paintings on the "Spirit of Sport".
Bob Peak: "My commission to translate the 'Spirit of Sport' into art presented and uncommon challenge. How does and artist express, in form and color, those transcendent qualities - courage, perseverance, dedication- which define the Spirit of Sport? How does an artist make real what is seen only as reflections? The courage and skill of Special Olympians were the focus for my inspiration. Six athletes, their lives, and their very words provided the key. My answer was variations on a theme. The theme is nature, ever-changing, portraying what is never-changing- The Spirit of Sport, which is the Spirit of Life."
